GTA 6 how to make money: car theft, fences and robberies
Story missions alone won't pay your way in GTA 6. Here's how car theft, fences and robberies will keep Jason and Lucia afloat.
Making money in GTA 6 means stealing cars for fences and robbing businesses, because Rockstar North's Rob Nelson has confirmed that missions alone won't give you enough cash to move the story forward. Both systems have been rebuilt from the ground up, and they're a lot more demanding than in GTA 5.

GTA 6 how to make money: the two big earners
Everything Rockstar has shown points to two core loops between story missions: stealing cars to sell and robbing businesses. Nelson told IGN that robberies represent "a HUGE amount of what you can and need to be doing in this game in between story missions." At certain points in the story you'll hit a cash wall and need to earn in the open world before you can continue. Vice City veterans will recognize the idea.
GTA 6 car theft: no more one-button hotwiring
In GTA 5, tapping Triangle got you into any parked car. Nelson admits that approach "left a lot of potential gameplay on the table." In GTA 6, some parked cars are off-limits until you progress further in the story and pick up the right gear. One model "needs a key cloner," another "will just need a Slim Jim."
Carjacking hasn't gone anywhere, though. You can still pull any driver out of their seat. According to the translated Famitsu interview, you can even order them out instead of swinging first, though they might refuse or fight back.
Waink: the phone app that sizes up every car
Jason and Lucia can eventually install Waink on their phones. Scan a car and it tells you:
- whether it's locked
- whether it has an alarm
- whether it carries a GPS tracker
- what it's worth at a fence or Pay 'n' Spray
- what it costs to register if you want to keep it
Watch out for trackers
High-end cars can have advanced tracking. In the demo IGN saw, Nelson stole a car whose tracker would ping the police if he drove too slowly, so he had to keep his speed up through dense traffic on streets Rockstar calls "narrower and more realistic in terms of scale." He also stopped to repair the car first, because "the car fence will give you less money for it if it's damaged."
GTA 6 robberies: "You can rob pretty much anything"
That's Nelson's own line, and the target list backs it up: convenience stores, pawn shops, jewelry stores, small banks and payday lenders, solo or with your partner. How you crack the safe matters. Blowing it with explosives is quick but loud and can damage part of the haul. Finding the code or leaning on staff takes longer and pays more. Hang around too long and the cops surround the building. Nelson escaped through a back door.
Bigger scores come with tougher security, more prep and a heavier police response, so planning where your getaway car sits is part of the job.
Car theft vs robberies at a glance
| Stealing cars for fences | Robbing businesses | |
|---|---|---|
| Gear you need | Key cloner or Slim Jim, depending on the car | Explosives or the safe code, plus a getaway plan |
| What cuts your payout | Body damage | Blown safe (damaged loot), rushed exit |
| Biggest risk | Tracker alerting police | Cops surrounding the building |
| Co-op with your partner? | Yes: the AI partner drives while you shoot | Yes: two-person robberies |
| Progression gate | Best-protected cars unlock through the story | Bigger targets need more prep |
6 rules for a clean score
- Scan first. Check for alarms and trackers in Waink before you touch the handle.
- Stage your exit. Park the getaway car where you'll actually need it.
- Protect the goods. Dents cost money at the fence, so get repairs done.
- Change your look. Cops remember your outfit and your ride. Your personal vehicle stores spare clothes and every weapon you've bought.
- At three stars, ditch the car. Nelson's advice: "get off the streets and get on foot into the alleys." Splitting Jason and Lucia up helps too, since police are hunting a couple.
- Don't go back right away. Officers linger near the scene after you lose them.
One more thing: Famitsu reports a bank account alongside your pocket cash, and getting Wasted or Busted can cost you money. Banking your earnings looks like a habit worth building early. And if your heists turn into bloodbaths, expect your GTA 6 criminal profile to shift.
Our take
This is one of the smartest changes Rockstar has revealed. Story money in GTA 5 stopped mattering fast, and cars were disposable. Tying progress to cash and giving every vehicle a value turns Leonida into a place you work, not scenery between cutscenes. The catch: if payouts are stingy, this could tip into grinding. Rockstar hasn't shared a single dollar figure, so the balance is impossible to judge before November 19. Still, choosing between a fast, loud job and a slow, lucrative one is exactly the kind of decision that produces stories players swap for years.

FAQ
How do you make money in GTA 6?
Outside story missions, Rockstar has confirmed two main methods: selling stolen cars to fences and robbing businesses such as convenience stores, pawn shops, jewelry stores and small banks. Missions alone won't cover what the story requires.
Can you steal any car in GTA 6?
Not right away. Some parked cars need tools like a key cloner or Slim Jim that unlock as the story progresses. You can always carjack a car with a driver in it.
Are there heists in GTA 6?
Yes. Robberies can be done solo or with your partner, and your approach to the safe changes both the payout and the police response.
