GTA 6 PS5 vs PS5 Pro: what Sony's new QSSR upscaler changes
Sony just gave the base PS5 AI upscaling. Could GTA 6 look sharper on it? Yes, if Rockstar opts in.
As of October 1, 2026, the standard PS5 supports QSSR, a lighter take on the PS5 Pro's AI upscaler. It could clean up GTA 6's image on base hardware, but nothing is confirmed: Rockstar would have to build it into the game.

GTA 6 PS5 vs PS5 Pro: what Sony just announced
On October 1, Sony unveiled QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution), which it calls "a new performance tier" of its AI upscaling. If you've used DLSS on PC, you know the idea: render the game at a lower resolution, then let a neural network rebuild a sharper image for your 4K TV. Until now that was a PS5 Pro perk, handled by PSSR and the Pro's dedicated machine-learning hardware.
QSSR runs on the launch-model PS5 with no extra silicon. It comes out of Project Amethyst, Sony's AI graphics partnership with AMD, and uses a "streamlined" network sized for 2020 hardware. Sony is upfront that PSSR on the Pro "remains the gold standard." Think of QSSR as the budget version, not a free Pro upgrade.
Two games already support it through patches: Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony says it will offer the tech "broadly" to every PlayStation developer.
Why it matters for GTA 6 on a base PS5
Rockstar said GTA 6's second trailer was captured in-game on a standard PS5. Digital Foundry's breakdown of that footage pointed to roughly 1440p at 30fps, and called it one of the most impressive real-time showcases it had ever seen. The one real knock? An image that looked a bit soft and shimmery in fine detail.
That's exactly where QSSR shines in Digital Foundry's early Wolverine testing: better temporal stability, more detail, and visibly crisper edges, hair, foliage and water. DF used the word "extraordinary," and described the performance cost as relatively minor. For a world packed with palm trees, swamp grass and reflective water like Leonida, that's a big deal.
One catch: QSSR isn't a system toggle. Every studio has to implement it game by game. Right now, neither Rockstar nor Sony has said GTA 6 will use it.

Should you still buy a PS5 Pro for GTA 6?
Here's a quick decision guide if you're on the fence before November 19:
- Base PS5 + 1080p or 1440p screen: stay put. The Pro's advantage shrinks a lot on that kind of display.
- Base PS5 + big 4K TV: wait for the first technical reviews of GTA 6. If Rockstar adds QSSR, the gap to the Pro narrows.
- No PS5 yet + a good 4K TV: the Pro is still the safest bet, with stronger PSSR and that Enhanced badge already spotted.
- Chasing 60fps: manage expectations. Nothing official promises 60fps on Pro, so bank on a cleaner image rather than double the frame rate.
Our take
QSSR is the best news this week for the huge number of players who'll boot up GTA 6 on a regular PS5, because it targets the one weakness anyone has found in the footage: sharpness. Still, we're not going to oversell it. Rockstar is seven weeks from launch on a massive game, and dropping in a brand-new upscaler that late is no small job. Our bet is a post-launch patch rather than day-one support. Either way, don't panic-buy a Pro this weekend. Real comparisons will land within days of release.

FAQ
GTA 6 PS5 vs PS5 Pro: which looks better?
The Pro should deliver the sharper image thanks to PSSR and the "Enhanced" badge spotted on the PlayStation Store, though Rockstar hasn't detailed any graphics modes yet.
What fps will GTA 6 run at on PS5?
Around 30fps on base PS5, based on Digital Foundry's Trailer 2 analysis. Rockstar hasn't published an official figure.
Does QSSR work automatically in every game?
No. Developers have to patch it in. Only Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei support it so far.
