GTA 6 rating explained: ESRB M, PEGI 18 and what's inside
Snortable cocaine, detailed decapitation, explicit sex scenes: GTA 6's age rating goes further than any GTA before it.
GTA 6 is rated M (Mature 17+) by the ESRB and PEGI 18 in Europe, which surprises nobody. What does surprise is the detail in a PEGI listing that went live in early October and was quickly pulled: it confirms explicit sex scenes and drugs the player can use on demand.

GTA 6 rating: what the deleted PEGI page said
Around October 2, the official PEGI website published its classification page for Grand Theft Auto VI, then took it down. Screenshots had already spread, and outlets including Forbes and gHacks reported on them. PEGI hasn't explained the removal. So treat this as an official rating that went public early, nothing more, nothing less.
Here's what the listing describes, according to those reports:
- Violence: bloody violence "with a high degree of realism," with some weapons able to cause detailed decapitation and dismemberment. Civilians and police can be targeted; animals can be hurt too, though with less graphic injuries.
- Drugs: drug use is "frequent and prominent," and the player can carry cocaine in their inventory and snort it.
- Sexual content: scenes of intercourse, occasional fetish scenes, nudity, and strip-club private dances with physical interaction.
- Language: frequent strong language, including discriminatory language.
- In-game purchases: flagged, meaning items can be bought with real money.
GTA 6 rating by region
PEGI is just one board. Here's the state of play as of October 6, 2026, based on store listings and the sources below:
| Region | Board | Rating | Key flags |
|---|---|---|---|
| US / Canada | ESRB | M (17+) | Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol; In-Game Purchases |
| UK / Europe | PEGI | 18 | Violence, sex, drugs, nudity, in-game purchases (listing posted, then removed) |
| Australia | ACB | R18+ (PS Store listing) | "Sex Scenes," drug use, high-impact violence |
| New Zealand | OFLC | R18 (PS Store listing) | "Sex Scenes," graphic violence, nudity |
| Saudi Arabia / UAE | GMEDIA / MRO | 21 | Highest local rating |
| Germany | USK | Pending | GTA 5 was USK 18 |
That Middle East "21" is where the "GTA 6 rated 21" chatter comes from. Neither the ESRB nor PEGI has a 21 tier.
Is GTA 6 rated higher than GTA 5?
Not on paper. The seven ESRB content descriptors for GTA 6 are word-for-word identical to GTA 5's in 2013. The difference is in the detail:
| GTA 5 (ESRB summary) | GTA 6 (PEGI / ACB listings) | |
|---|---|---|
| Sex | Implied acts, topless dancers | Explicit intercourse scenes, fetish scenes |
| Dismemberment | "Rare depictions" | "Detailed" decapitation and dismemberment |
| Drugs | Scripted sequences | Cocaine as a usable inventory item |
| "Users Interact" | Yes (GTA Online) | Not on the ESRB listing |
That missing "Users Interact" tag lines up with what we already know: GTA 6 Online won't be there on day one. That's our read, not a Rockstar statement. And the "In-Game Purchases" flag also covers DLC and edition upgrades, like the Standard-to-Ultimate jump in our GTA 6 pre-order guide. On its own, it doesn't prove single-player microtransactions.
What age is GTA 6 for? A quick checklist for parents
Short answer: 17+ in the US, 18+ in the UK and Europe. Given what the listings describe, that number means something this time. If a teenager is lobbying hard for November 19:
- Read the full ESRB rating summary on esrb.org once it's posted. Trailers don't show any of this content.
- Turn on console parental controls: PS5 family management can block games by age rating, and the Xbox Family Settings app does the same on Xbox.
- Set a $0 spending limit on the child account, since in-game purchases are flagged.
- Talk it through: if you do say yes, knowing upfront about the sex scenes and drug use beats finding out over their shoulder.
Our take
An M rating was always a given. What's new is the shift from watching to doing. In GTA 5, drugs were mostly a scripted gag mission; in GTA 6, cocaine is an item in your pocket. Sex scenes no longer cut to black. It fits the tone hinted at in LOVE Magazine's deep dive on Jason and Lucia: an adult couple, shot like a prestige TV drama. We'd rather Rockstar own that than pretend otherwise. The real test is whether it serves the story or just the headlines. We find out November 19.
