Is GTA 6 coming to Switch 2? Nintendo's answer and our odds
Nintendo won't say yes or no to GTA 6 on Switch 2. It says the call belongs to Rockstar and Take-Two.
GTA 6 is not coming to Switch 2 on November 19, 2026: it launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. But Nintendo of America's president just left the door open, and that's the most direct thing Nintendo has said on the subject so far.
GTA 6 Switch 2: what Nintendo actually said
Asked by Variety about the question that floods every Nintendo post, Nintendo of America president Devon Pritchard kept it short: "That's going to be a conversation for Take-Two and Rockstar, but nothing to announce on my end at this time." She added that "we're just at the beginning of seeing what Nintendo Switch 2 can do."
That's a textbook platform-holder answer: no promise, no denial, and the ball goes back to the publisher. Take-Two has never mentioned a Switch 2 version of GTA 6. The closest thing we have is CEO Strauss Zelnick saying in 2025 that the company decides "on a case-by-case basis" and "would not necessarily bring every title to every platform."
Why it isn't a fantasy: Rockstar already ships on Switch 2
The strongest hint comes from Rockstar, not Nintendo. On December 2, 2025, the studio released a native Switch 2 version of the original Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare included, with DLSS and HDR, alongside new PS5 and Xbox Series versions. Owners of the digital Switch version got it as a free upgrade with save transfer. In other words, Rockstar already knows the hardware and Nvidia's upscaling tools.
There's history on the original Switch too: GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition arrived there in 2021. GTA 5, though, never made it to a Nintendo console despite years of rumors. And on the Red Dead Redemption 2 front, insider Nash Weedle claims a Switch 2 port exists but is "on hold," likely until GTA 6 is out the door. Treat that as an unconfirmed rumor: Rockstar hasn't announced anything.
The real hurdle: Switch 2 vs. Xbox Series S
The technical debate boils down to one question: can GTA 6 run on something weaker than the Xbox Series S, the lowest-spec console it ships on? Here's the rough picture, based on public spec sheets and Digital Foundry's analysis:
| Console | Memory | GPU power (approx.) | GTA 6 on Nov 19 |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | 16 GB GDDR6 | ~10.3 TFLOPS | ✅ Yes |
| Xbox Series X | 16 GB GDDR6 | ~12 TFLOPS | ✅ Yes |
| Xbox Series S | 10 GB GDDR6 | ~4 TFLOPS | ✅ Yes |
| Switch 2 (docked) | 12 GB LPDDR5X | ~3 TFLOPS + DLSS | ❌ Not announced |
| Original Switch | 4 GB | < 0.5 TFLOPS | ❌ Not happening |
On paper, the GPU gap to the Series S isn't huge, and Switch 2 actually has more memory. DLSS does a lot of heavy lifting too: Cyberpunk 2077 has run on Switch 2 since 2025, with compromises. The real bottleneck is the CPU, which is far weaker than what's in a PS5 or Xbox. Digital Foundry also flagged the ray-traced global illumination and strand-based hair seen in Trailer 2 as serious obstacles. And GTA 6 is simulating dense crowds, traffic, dynamic weather and over 170 animal species, as we covered in our breakdown of GTA 6's hurricanes and wildlife. Dropping the resolution doesn't fix any of that.
Storage is another squeeze. Switch 2 ships with 256 GB, and GTA 6 is expected to be huge, as we explained in our guide to how many GB GTA 6 will need.
Four ways this could play out
- Never (most likely in the short term). Rockstar's next priorities are the PC version and GTA 6 Online. Switch 2 isn't near the top of that list.
- A late port, 2028 or beyond. The Red Dead Redemption playbook: a partner studio handles the conversion once the game has done its business elsewhere. Plausible, with big visual cuts.
- Cloud streaming. The route some heavy games took on the original Switch. Unlikely for a game this big, and Microsoft just shot down the idea of GTA 6 streaming on PC, as we unpacked in our fact-check on GTA 6 cloud gaming.
- A consolation prize: GTA 5 or RDR2 on Switch 2. Digital Foundry called this the most realistic option back in 2025, and it's where current rumors point.
Our take
Pritchard's comment doesn't move the release calendar, but it confirms that neither Nintendo nor Rockstar is ruling the idea out. The Red Dead Redemption port shows Rockstar can ship a clean Switch 2 version, but that was a 2010 game. Squeezing a 2026 open world built around PS5-class hardware onto a handheld is a different beast. Our bet: no GTA 6 on Switch 2 before 2028 at the earliest, and a GTA 5 or RDR2 port well before that. If Switch 2 is your only console, don't hold out for a November surprise. You'll need a PS5 or an Xbox Series.
FAQ
Is GTA 6 coming to Switch 2?
Nothing is announced. Nintendo says it's up to Take-Two and Rockstar, and neither has ever mentioned a Switch 2 version. At launch on November 19, 2026, GTA 6 is PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
Is there a GTA 6 Switch release date?
No. There's no Switch or Switch 2 release date, no pre-order and no price. Any retailer listing a "Switch 2 edition" is not based on an official announcement.
Can a Switch 2 port of GTA 6 happen at all?
Technically, a heavily scaled-back port isn't out of the question thanks to DLSS and 12 GB of memory, but the CPU is a major limit. Expect years, not months, if it ever happens.
