Will GTA 6 win GOTY 2026? The Game Awards timing problem
GTA 6 lands November 19, after The Game Awards' nomination vote. Is Rockstar's giant about to miss GOTY 2026?
Can GTA 6 win GOTY 2026? It should technically be eligible for The Game Awards, but if the show follows last year's calendar, nominees will be revealed two days before the game is even out. The Golden Joystick Awards are already off the table.

Will GTA 6 win GOTY 2026, or is it simply too late?
This one blew up at the end of September after Forbes, Dot Esports and others ran the numbers. Here's the core issue: The Game Awards 2026 take place Thursday, December 10 in Los Angeles. GTA 6 launches Thursday, November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That's a three-week gap for a game reportedly around 80 hours long.
The rulebook isn't the obstacle. Last year, any game released to the public on or before November 21, 2025 qualified, which was the third Friday of November. Apply the same logic to 2026 and the cutoff lands on Friday, November 20. To be clear, that's our projection; The Game Awards haven't published the 2026 date yet. Either way, GTA 6 would sneak in by a single day.
The jury is the obstacle. In 2025, the first round of media voting opened November 4 and nominees went public November 17. Run that same schedule this year and voters would be shortlisting Game of the Year before anyone can buy GTA 6.

"A jury who voted for a game they didn't play"
That line comes from Alanah Pearce, a former games journalist whom Dot Esports describes as an ex-jury member. Her point: if GTA 6 shows up in the GOTY lineup without early access for voters, it's a blind vote. She also notes there aren't really hard rules for edge cases like this. It comes down to how the show chooses to handle it.
There's an obvious way out: review copies. Voting outlets often get games early. If Rockstar ships codes well ahead of launch, jurors could put dozens of hours in before they vote. The catch is that Rockstar hasn't said a word about review timing, and it has a long history of keeping its games under lock and key. Geoff Keighley hasn't publicly addressed the issue either.
Golden Joysticks: already out of the race
No suspense here. The Golden Joystick Awards ceremony is November 11, eight days before launch, and voting wraps at the end of October. GamesRadar, which runs the awards, confirms GTA 6 will be eligible in 2027 instead.
That has a fun side effect: GTA 6 can't pull off the "Big 5" sweep, winning Game of the Year at the Golden Joysticks, The Game Awards, DICE, the GDC Awards and BAFTA in a single season. Baldur's Gate 3 did it, and so did Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, The Game Awards' 2025 GOTY.
Three ways this could play out
- Early review codes: Rockstar sends the game out early, voters play it, GTA 6 gets a fair nomination. The cleanest outcome.
- The "it's GTA" nomination: it makes the shortlist even though most jurors haven't finished it. Expect a credibility fight.
- No GOTY slot: it lands in other categories (or a special one, an idea floated in coverage) and sets its sights on DICE, GDC and BAFTA in 2027. There's no public rule that would simply bump it to The Game Awards 2027, though.
Meanwhile, the competition is lining up. At the Golden Joysticks, 007 First Light and Big Walk lead with five nominations each, ahead of Resident Evil Requiem.
Our take
A GOTY handed to GTA 6 by people who barely booted it up would hurt The Game Awards far more than it would help Rockstar. GTA 6 doesn't need a December trophy to matter; the show does need to stay credible. The healthy fix is early review codes, even if that means Rockstar loosening its famous secrecy a little. If that doesn't happen, GTA 6 has all of 2027 to collect hardware. The real loser? Whichever game wins GOTY 2026 and gets tagged forever as "the year GTA 6 wasn't in the running."

FAQ
Can GTA 6 win GOTY 2026?
On paper, yes. Releasing November 19, it should clear an eligibility cutoff expected around November 20 (not yet official). But nominees are usually announced before that, so without early review codes the jury would be voting blind.
When are The Game Awards 2026?
Thursday, December 10, 2026, in Los Angeles, three weeks after GTA 6 launches.
Is GTA 6 eligible for the Game Awards 2026 or 2027?
Nothing official yet. Based on past rules it should count for 2026, but a de facto miss is possible if voters can't play it in time. For the Golden Joysticks it's settled: 2027.
